Why doctors now warn we should not sit on the toilet for more than 10 minutes

1 min read

Spending more than 10 minutes on the toilet can harm your health, experts warn. Dr. Lai Xue, a colorectal surgeon, explains that prolonged sitting increases pressure on blood vessels around the anus due to gravity and the toilet’s shape, raising the risk of hemorrhoids. Dr. Farah Monzur adds that forced straining during extended sessions can weaken pelvic floor muscles, which are essential for smooth bowel movements, and even cause rectal prolapse. Losing track of time, often due to phone use, worsens the strain. To protect your anorectal health, limit bathroom trips to five to ten minutes.
