DPM says Malaysia’s plans to curb water wastage face challenges, outlines mitigation steps

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof acknowledged that Malaysia is currently off-track to meet its 31 per cent water non-revenue water (NRW) reduction target under the 12th Malaysia Plan due to financial strains on operators and other setbacks, he told Parliament. 

Malaysia revises approach to reduce water wastage, DPM says

Fadillah explained that the Covid-19 pandemic and financial constraints have limited the progress of prior NRW reduction initiatives, but he highlighted enhanced programmes and incentive schemes designed to help operators accelerate pipeline replacements nationwide. 

The ministry anticipates that updated tariff mechanisms and reimbursed operator participation could improve funding flows and set the stage for achieving an NRW rate of 28.8 per cent by 2030, he added.
