It is to no surprise that luxury brands like Christian Dior and Chanel have had their issues with quality. However, they are now encountering obstacles in entering the Indian market due to the government’s mandate for mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for imported footwear.
Quality control drama for luxury brands
The BIS, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, oversees standardization and quality certification in India, requiring products to bear the ISI mark. This rule, effective since July 2023, necessitates global brands to meet Indian standards, possibly requiring adjustments in their European factories.
Despite appeals for leniency, the government remains firm, aligning with efforts to boost domestic manufacturing and curb counterfeit products, as emphasized by Union Minister Piyush Goyal in January 2023.
