Hari Raya sarong-and-towel contracts cited in RM4m abuse-of-power charges

1 min read

Kuala Lumpur: Prosecutors have leveled serious corruption allegations against former Malaysian Armed Forces chief Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, accusing him of exploiting his senior positions for personal gain. In two counts under the MACC Act, they claim Mohd Nizam used his role as Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel Services and chairman of the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (TKAT) committees to approve contracts worth over RM4 million for Hari Raya gift items like sarongs, batik, towels, backpacks, and tools. These deals allegedly went to companies in which he had interests, netting him RM552,481.90 in gratification between June 2024 and March 2025.

Additionally, under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust, prosecutors assert Mohd Nizam dishonestly diverted RM3 million from TKAT funds into an unauthorized investment in a company, bypassing the investment committee’s approval. The fourth charge, under Section 165, involves him allegedly accepting RM200,000 in cash without consideration from a company director linked to his official duties.

Former army chief

This follows similar charges against former army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and his wife Salwani Anuar, whom prosecutors accuse under AMLATFPUAA of money laundering tied to defence procurement embezzlement. They face four counts for handling proceeds of unlawful activities, marking a widening probe into military corruption. Convictions could bring decades in prison, fines, and whipping, highlighting systemic issues in defence fund management. The cases underscore prosecutors’ push for accountability in high-ranking military roles, with trials set to expose further details.
