Ex-MITI Minister Now Concerned if Meta will be BANNED if They Refused to Apply Licence

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will enforce a regulatory framework for internet messaging services and social media platforms starting next year to combat cybercrime and cyberbullying. All services with over 8 million users in Malaysia must obtain an Application Service Provider Class License under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

Legal action, including potential bans, may be taken against unlicensed platforms. Former MITI Deputy Minister Ong Kian Ming raised concerns about the possibility of bans if major platforms like META do not comply. This has sparked public debate, with opinions divided between support and concerns over potential revenue loss and the creation of local alternatives.
