KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has condemned the bullying and threats directed at Universiti Malaya student Ummi Umairah Bakhit following comments she made during a recent public forum.

Speaking after attending the Smart Parents Interactive Hub programme today, Fahmi urged victims of cyberbullying to lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) without delay.

He said the acts of insulting, threatening and even attempting to intimidate the student by suggesting she could be tracked down at the university were unacceptable and reflected poor standards of public discourse.

Fahmi stressed that differing opinions should be respected, noting that students have a legitimate right to express their views as long as they do not violate any laws or constitute criminal acts.

According to him, while some individuals may disagree with Ummi Umairah’s tone or approach, greater attention should be given to the substance of her remarks, which centred on corruption and accountability.

During an open forum involving UMNO leaders, the student questioned public fundraising efforts to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay a RM50 million fine.

Separately, Fahmi revealed that MCMC is investigating coordinated inauthentic behaviour targeting Sultan Ibrahim and Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, involving AI-generated content and hundreds of suspected fake accounts.
