Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri has filed a lawsuit urging the Malaysian courts to declare the Bahasa Malaysia (BM) translation of the Federal Constitution as the authoritative text under Article 160B.

He argues that the 2003 BM launch by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong effectively prescribed it as such. Alternatively, he seeks a court order for the government to make the BM version authoritative within five years.
However, past Federal Court rulings in 2018 and 2024 have upheld the English text as authoritative, citing the lack of formal prescription. The English version has remained the legal reference since Malaysia’s formation in 1963.
