Headline: Faster Border Crossings: Singapore to Launch Facial Recognition for Motorcycle Lanes at Land Checkpoints
Story: The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) is set to transform cross-border travel by replacing fingerprints with facial recognition at automated motorcycle lanes. Starting March 31, the agency will deploy the system at 18 lanes at the Woodlands Checkpoint before expanding to all 70 lanes. The Tuas Checkpoint will follow suit in the third quarter of 2026.
Facial Recognition
Under this new protocol, riders and pillions use a QR code from the MyICA app alongside facial scanning for verification. Following successful trials involving 150,000 participants, ICA has refined the system to detect obstructions like face masks and sunglasses. Travellers must lift their helmet visors and ensure their faces are clear for the camera. While the system enables passport-less clearance, ICA reminds users to carry their passports for backup verification and to update QR codes if they obtain new travel documents.
