Over 1.2 Million Gig Workers to Gain Legal Recognition in Malaysia

A coalition of trade unions and professional associations has hailed the Gig Workers Bill 2025 as a historic milestone in Malaysia’s labour laws, marking the first time over 1.2 million gig workers will be formally recognised.

The coalition—comprising MTUC, CUEPACS, UNIMLC, PROFIMA, MyBIM and the Malaysian e-Hailing Alliance—urged MPs to support the bill, which introduces four key pillars: clear legal definition of gig workers, guaranteed fair pay, a dedicated tribunal for disputes, and mandatory social protection.

PERKESO said the bill addresses urgent social justice gaps, citing that only 25.4% of gig workers contributed to social security in 2024, yet they accounted for 28.6% of benefits disbursed. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim tabled the bill for first reading yesterday.
