There is no need to make the halal certification mandatory

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary, Azman Abidin, stated that halal certification should not be mandatory for restaurants and food companies not dealing with pork or alcohol. While supporting Minister Mohd Na’im Mokhtar’s proposal, Azman highlighted the complexity and high costs of obtaining certification, which deters many operators, including Malay-owned businesses. He stressed the distinction between serving halal food and having halal certification, noting that most Malay restaurants serve halal food without certification. Azman urged politicians to stop politicizing the issue, following criticism from opposition figures against DAP’s Teresa Kok for expressing her views on the proposal.
