SYDNEY: A Smithfield family home was left badly damaged after a blaze, believed to have been sparked by a hybrid Toyota RAV4, erupted just before 3am on Friday. The Soto family fled to their backyard as explosions woke neighbours, who rushed to help. Firefighters contained the fire but two cars were destroyed and the house’s front was scorched. Resident Saul Soto, who has lived there for 21 years, described the loss as “devastating.” Investigators confirmed the blaze started under the car’s bonnet. While insured, the family faces uncertainty about returning home. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. — Sept 9, 2025
