KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has urged Malaysians not to take matters into their own hands against foreign traders operating without licences, warning that such actions are unlawful.
Speaking to reporters after attending a special education multi-sensory classroom upgrading project at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Sri Sinar, Yeoh said enforcement operations involving foreign nationals must be carried out through coordinated efforts involving the Immigration Department, police and other relevant agencies.
Illegal Foreign Traders
She said local authorities are limited by the laws governing their powers and cannot act independently in such cases.
Responding to concerns over the continued presence of foreign traders and reports of locals taking enforcement into their own hands, Yeoh stressed that integrated operations were necessary nationwide.
The Segambut MP also said she had instructed Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to strengthen licence inspections to ensure permits issued to Malaysians are not sublet to foreign nationals.
She warned that licences found to be misused in such a manner would be revoked.
Yeoh added that DBKL plans to expand the use of body cameras among enforcement officers to improve transparency during operations.
