As we age, our susceptibility to infectious diseases increases, especially when combined with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or chronic lung disease. This observation became crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic, as older individuals are also at higher risk of severe influenza or flu.
Danger of Influenza
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The body’s response to the virus involves acute inflammation at the infection site and a complex immune response throughout the body. Unfortunately, about 90% of influenza-related deaths and a significant number of hospitalizations occur among individuals aged 65 and older.
Surprisingly, there are knowledge gaps regarding the virus’ severity among the older population, as indicated by a recent poll conducted by the Immunise4Life secretariat. To address these gaps, three experts, including Professor Dr. Tan Maw Pin, Dr. Aslannif Roslan, and Associate Professor Dr. Lim Lee Ling, provides insights and recommendations.
The Ministry of Health Malaysia recommends annual influenza vaccination for older individuals as a safe and effective preventive measure. Additionally, practicing proper hand hygiene, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces are advised. Taking proactive steps towards influenza prevention can significantly enhance the quality of life during the golden years.
