Perak police have detained five Chinese nationals after busting an Ipoh scam call centre that allegedly targeted victims in Germany with fake online investment schemes, Bernama reported.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said in a statement on Monday night (Nov 2) that the men, aged between 26 and 43, were detained in a raid on a house in Anjung Bercham Utama at about 6.30pm on Friday (Oct 30), after police received information about the activity.
Ipoh scam call centre raided
Police seized five computers, 10 mobile phones and four routers, with an estimated total value of about RM25,000, according to Bernama.
“The syndicate is believed to have been operating from the premises since September,” Mohd Alwi said.
He said initial investigations and conversation scripts found on the seized computers indicated that the operation was running non-existent online investment scams.
How the syndicate operated
According to police, the syndicate used WhatsApp and local internet access to run the call centre, contacting victims at random with profile pictures of attractive women.
Victims were persuaded to join investment schemes that were claimed to be based in Germany and that promised high returns, before being asked to make repeated payments, police said.
The report did not state how many people had been cheated or the total losses involved.
Chinese nationals remanded
All five suspects were remanded for four days from Saturday (Oct 31) until Wednesday (Nov 4) to assist investigations, Bernama reported.
The case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 120B of the Penal Code, as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
