Police in Kedah have arrested a 35-year-old man over a viral video that showed him allegedly driving recklessly in a red Bomba MPV and scolding motorists who did not make way for him, Bernama reported on Thursday (Oct 29).
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan told reporters at the district police headquarters that a police report was lodged on Tuesday (Oct 27) after the video began circulating. The man was not named.
Arrest in Bandar Puteri Jaya
The suspect was picked up in Bandar Puteri Jaya, where police seized the multi-purpose vehicle and several other items.
A photo caption in the Malay Mail report said the vehicle, which carried the word ‘Bomba’ and was fitted with a beacon light, was allegedly filmed running a red light in Sungai Petani, prompting a clarification from the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department.
Hanyan said the MPV belonged to the man, who held a valid driving licence and had no previous criminal record. His urine screening test came back negative.
Bomba MPV Probe Under Two Laws
The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, police said.
Investigations found that the man had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder nine years ago and was believed to have stopped his treatment about two years ago, Hanyan said.
Reckless Driving – Sent to Hospital
The man was remanded for one day before being admitted to Sungai Petani Hospital for treatment and monitoring, according to police.
Hanyan urged families to make sure relatives with a history of psychiatric treatment attend their scheduled follow-up appointments.
