A 41-year-old man with six previous criminal and drug-related offences has been arrested in connection with the Kota Tinggi axe killing of a 68-year-old Felda settler at Felda Lok Heng Selatan, Johor.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 27) that the victim was found covered in blood at about 7.56pm on Monday (Oct 26), with slash wounds to his head and both arms.
Medical officers sent from the nearby Bukit Waha Health Clinic pronounced him dead.
Police believe the suspect had been on a violent rampage before he came across the victim by the roadside, Malay Mail reported. Social media posts also claimed he had been seen behaving aggressively by the roadside, causing fear among residents.
Suspect arrested at palm oil plantation
A joint team from the state police contingent and the district police arrested the local man at a palm oil plantation at 10.26am on Tuesday.
Police seized a motorcycle and an axe from the suspect. Investigators believe the axe was the weapon used in the killing.
Background checks found that the man has six previous records for criminal and drug-related offences, the police chief said. Neither the suspect nor the victim has been named.
Kota Tinggi axe killing under murder probe
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Police said investigators were still looking into the motive behind the attack.
An earlier Malay Mail report on Tuesday quoted Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman as saying police were investigating the incident. That report said other residents noticed the attack and that the suspect fled on a motorcycle.
Members of the public have been urged not to speculate on the case or post comments that could interfere with the investigation.
