Police have detained a 36-year-old woman after a car that had switched drivers in the emergency lane was involved in a Kuala Muda PLUS crash that killed a retired police sergeant and his wife on Friday (Nov 6).
The victims were identified as Suhaimi Saidin, 64, and his wife Normah Hashim, 60. They were riding a Yamaha XMAX scooter home to Bandar Utama when the crash occurred at about noon at KM114.4 of the North-South Expressway near Kuala Muda. Both died at the scene from severe head and body injuries.
Car rejoined lane after switching drivers
According to Malay Mail, which cited Sinar Harian, a Perodua Bezza had stopped in the emergency lane and then moved back into the left lane after its occupants switched drivers. The scooter and a second motorcycle then collided with the car.
Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said early information showed the vehicle had stopped and moved off again after the drivers swapped places.
Two teenagers on the second motorcycle were injured and taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.
Kuala Muda PLUS crash probe under Road Transport Act
The woman, who owns the Bezza, was detained to help establish the circumstances of the crash. Police are still determining whether she was behind the wheel or a passenger at the time.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, police said.
Police have appealed to witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward to assist the investigation.
