KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla has filed a lawsuit challenging Malaysia’s smoking ban in all workplace buildings, seeking an exemption for his law firm. A self-proclaimed “hardcore smoker,” Haniff, who smokes three packs daily, argued that smoking is a lawful activity protected by the Federal Constitution. He claims the ban unfairly discriminates against smokers. Haniff has informed employees and clients of his firm’s smoking-friendly status and offered compensation to those uncomfortable with the arrangement. He is asking the court to declare the ban unconstitutional and allow workplace operators to apply for exemptions while ensuring compliance.
