KUALA LUMPUR — The historic Lebuh Ampang may soon regain its old identity as “Chetty Street” under a proposal by MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan. Speaking at a Deepavali event, he urged the government to rename the street in recognition of the Chettiar community’s contribution to Malaya’s early economy.

Once known as Chetty Theru, the area was a hub for South Indian moneylenders who financed local enterprises before independence. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa acknowledged the proposal’s cultural significance, calling it an important step in preserving Malaysia’s multicultural economic heritage. – Photo: WIKI
