Former finance minister Lim Guan Eng has urged the government to gradually raise individual income tax relief to reflect rising living costs. He noted the current RM9,000 relief has remained unchanged for 15 years despite inflation, saying it should now be closer to RM12,000.

Lim cautioned that a sudden RM3,000 increase would strain national revenue, instead proposing a phased approach of RM1,000 annually until 2028.
He argued this would ease financial pressure while restoring public confidence in the government. Lim also referenced DAP secretary‑general Anthony Loke’s remarks that economic issues have eroded voter trust, citing Sabah’s recent election results.
