In Chiang Mai, police and health officials conducted a sting operation on Dec 24, arresting a shop owner, Paul, for selling magic mushrooms, a Category 5 narcotic. The operation was triggered by the Dec 20 death of British tourist Vadher Raj Akhil, 25, who overdosed on the mushrooms purchased from Paul’s shop near Tha Pae Gate. Akhil suffered a fatal reaction at a resort 40 minutes after consumption. Using a foreign undercover agent, authorities bought a bag of mushrooms for 500 baht, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of the narcotic. Paul faces multiple drug-related charges.
