The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) reaffirmed in today’s Friday sermon that the state upholds the creed of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah (ASWJ) as its official Islamic doctrine.
MAIS Warns Against Extremist Groups Misusing ASWJ Label
It follows the theological paths of al-Ash’ari and al-Maturidi, jurisprudence of Imam al-Shafi‘i, and Sufi ethics of al-Ghazali and Junaid al-Baghdadi. The sermon stressed the need for a clear definition of ASWJ to prevent misuse by deviant groups like Syiah, Arqam, and Hizbut Tahrir.
This comes after concerns over narrow interpretations raised by the Raja of Perlis last year. MAIS warns that ambiguous definitions may allow extremists to falsely claim ASWJ identity.
