KOTA BHARU – Malaysia has recorded 135,000 drug addicts nationwide as of June 30, with Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail describing the figure as “alarming.” He said the government is intensifying prevention, rehabilitation, and enforcement programmes to curb drug abuse. Kelantan tops the list of cases, followed by Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah, due to their proximity to Thailand. About 60% of users in these states consume syabu and ecstasy, with most addicts aged 15 to 35, Malaysia’s key productive workforce group. Saifuddin said addiction robs the nation of valuable human potential.
