The Malaysian government has announced that a cross-border worker protection scheme for Malaysians working daily in Singapore and other neighbouring countries is expected to be rolled out by end of 2026, with a feasibility study due for completion by March, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan Ramakrishnan said.
Cross-border worker protection scheme aims to close coverage gap for overseas commuters
Ramanan said the proposed scheme will extend employment injury and income protection to workers who commute across national borders for work — a move designed to fill existing gaps in coverage that currently leave many without protection once they leave their workplace.
Labour groups and commuter workers have welcomed the initiative, noting that it could provide peace of mind for Malaysians who face daily risks on the road or at work outside the country, particularly in Singapore.
