Malaysia qualified for the 2023 Asian Cup Finals on merit for the first time in 42 years after a thrashing 4-1 victory over Bangladesh at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. This is Malaysia’s fourth appearance in the Asian Cup Finals.
Goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed made his first international appearance in front of the nearly 53,000-strong crowd, which included Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in the final Group E match of the Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
The supporters did not have to wait long as Safawi Rasid scored a penalty in the 16th minute. Mohd Ibrahim scored for Bangladesh in the 31st minute. Dion Cools scored his first goal for Malaysia in the 38th. Syafiq Ahmad scored a header in the 47th to put Malaysia up 3-1. Darren Lok scored Malaysia’s fourth goal (73rd).
