Malaysia on track to cut fiscal deficit to 3.5% in 2026, says second finance minister

1 min read

Malaysia’s fiscal deficit is projected to shrink to about 3.5 per cent in 2026, continuing recent improvements in fiscal discipline, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said in Parliament. The reduction reflects efforts to balance fiscal consolidation with support for economic growth and development.

Government expects Malaysia’s 2026 fiscal deficit to narrow to 3.5%

Amir Hamzah noted that the deficit fell significantly from 6.4 per cent in 2021 to 4.1 per cent in 2024 and that this progress aligns with medium-term targets under Malaysia’s fiscal responsibility framework.

He added that the ringgit’s strength and strong equity market performance reflect growing investor confidence, while continued economic growth and trade expansion provide further support for fiscal stability.
