The United States is considering zero-tariff exemptions for Malaysian exports such as palm oil, cocoa, furniture, and automotive and aerospace components, according to chief negotiator Mastura Ahmad Mustafa.
Malaysia Seeking Zero-Tariff Deal
These products are not produced domestically in the U.S. and may qualify under a unilateral tariff arrangement. However, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals remain excluded under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
President Trump recently announced steep tariffs on branded pharmaceuticals, furniture, and heavy trucks, effective October 1, 2025. Malaysia aims to finalise a reciprocal trade agreement before Trump’s visit for the 47th Asean Summit in October.
