The relationship between Singapore and Malaysia is expected to improve under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. After his first visit to Singapore in January, two agreements were signed between both countries on digitalisation, green economy, data protection and cybersecurity, says controversial Penang Deputy CM Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy. Anwar may visit Singapore again in October 2023. Both countries are implementing the Rapid Transit System for faster travel between Singapore and Johor Bahru. However, there have been tensions over Singapore’s sovereignty over the island of Batu Putih. Despite this, both countries have agreed to discuss and resolve issues surrounding the island. Anwar is expected to strengthen diplomatic relationships not only with Singapore, but also other countries in the region.
