Malaysia’s tourism sector has taken an early hit from the ongoing Iran conflict, with travel agencies recording about 2,800 tour package cancellations within the first week. According to industry players, around 800 cancellations came from Iranian tourists on the very first day, with the remaining losses from other regions as global travel routes were disrupted.
Malaysia tourism sees 2,800 cancellations as Iran war disrupts travel demand
The conflict has impacted major Middle East transit hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi, affecting not just travellers from the region but also those from Europe, the US and beyond who rely on these routes. Travel agencies say some businesses heavily dependent on Middle Eastern markets are now under pressure and may need to pivot to new customer segments to stay afloat.
While cancellations have slowed after the initial wave, tourists are now adopting a “wait-and-see” approach, with many enquiries for mid-year travel not converting into confirmed bookings. Rising airfares driven by fuel costs are also expected to reduce tourist spending, potentially impacting Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia 2026 targets.
