Malaysian Government Faces Unfounded Allegations by Lawyer Representing Sulu Group

The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has criticized and deemed the letter, demands, and insinuations made against the Malaysian Government by lawyer Paul H Cohen, who claims to represent the heirs of the Sulu group, as excessive.

In the letter dated May 28, the said lawyer demanded immediate payment, specifically before June 2, for the alleged Final Award amounting to US$16.412 billion, including a 10 percent interest, as well as US$3.502 billion for lawyer and expert fees, and US$4.026 billion for the cost of balance weighing. “In this matter, it is excessive for the claimant to demand payment for the alleged Final Award while legal proceedings are still ongoing,” said the AGC in a statement released yesterday.

The AGC further stated that as a result, a police report was filed on June 1 against Paul H Cohen for unfair statements and unfounded allegations made against the Attorney General. The Malaysian Government will take all necessary steps, including legal action, to end all related claims to ensure the interests, immunity, sovereignty, and sovereignty of Malaysia are always protected and preserved.
