Malaysians Now Bombarded with 1.6 Million Scam Calls

1 min read

Malaysian citizens have been bombarded with an increase in scam calls in 2023, with over 1.6 million registered scam calls throughout the year. With a 100.92% increase from the previous year, scam calls are on the rise due to the incorporation of generative AI by scammers, making it more challenging to discern genuine from fraudulent calls.

Malaysians bombarded with scam calls

Malaysia ranks second in Asia in terms of the surge in scam calls. To combat this issue, the Royal Malaysia Police is working closely with Whoscall, a digital anti-fraud app, which has successfully tagged a total of 1.632 million scam calls this year.

However, about 10% of users still answered the tagged scam calls, which is a cause for concern. To combat this, Whoscall has expanded its anti-fraud detection scope to include the URL Scanner and ID Security features.
