KUALA LUMPUR — A total of 97,318 Malaysians have renounced their citizenship to become Singaporeans between 2015 and June 2025, the Home Ministry told Parliament. Last year saw a record 16,930 renunciations, surpassing the previous peak of 13,362 in 2019. As of June this year, 6,060 have made the switch. Numbers had dipped to 5,591 in 2020 during the pandemic but have since rebounded sharply. Annual figures from 2015 to 2018 ranged between 7,394 and 8,654. Malaysia continues to grapple with brain drain, with an estimated 1.86 million citizens relocating abroad over the past five decades.
