Man lost weight and distressed while forced to be a scammer in Cambodia

1 min read

A Malaysian man, aged 38, has fallen victim to an online scam syndicate in Cambodia after being lured by a job offer as a driver with a lucrative salary of USD 5,000 (RM22,380) per month. His predicament was revealed by his mother, Ng, 60, who stated that her son, a divorcee with three children, is now forced to work as a scammer and suffers abuse for not meeting the syndicate’s targets.

Ng explained that her son, formerly a personal driver in Kuala Lumpur, traveled to Cambodia on October 24 after being invited by a friend. However, she lost contact with him on October 28. On December 3, the friend informed her about his captivity.

Ng later managed to contact her son via video call in mid-December, noting his deteriorated physical condition. Her son disclosed that he was coerced into becoming a scammer after initially being promised a legitimate job as a driver.
