Maria Chin Loses Bid to Challenge Shariah Contempt Order at Federal Court

The Federal Court has denied former Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah leave to appeal against a shariah court’s show-cause order for contempt. Justice Nordin Hassan said no novel legal issue warranted a hearing, reaffirming clear boundaries between civil and shariah jurisdictions. 

Maria Chin Loses Bid to Challenge Shariah Contempt Order at Federal Court

Maria had challenged a 2019 contempt ruling over her statement criticizing the jailing of Emilia Hanafi, calling it unjust. The Court of Appeal had previously ruled civil courts lacked jurisdiction over shariah matters. 

Maria must now appeal through the shariah legal system. Religious Affairs Minister Na’im Mokhtar urged respect for the decision and Malaysia’s dual legal framework.
