MMEA Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone director Commander Mohd Hairil Othman explained that the traps were seized under the Fisheries Act 1985 for using prohibited fishing methods. The method is favored for its higher income generation but poses a threat to marine ecosystems.

Two foreign nationals were arrested for deploying these illegal traps, and they were handed over to the Immigration Department.
