In Terengganu, Malaysia, a tragic accident occurred when a father, unaware of his young son’s proximity, accidentally ran over the 20-month-old boy with his four-wheel drive. The incident took place at their Kampung Wakaf Kubor home around 9:30 am.

Distracted by a mobile phone

The child, who had been playing with a mobile phone, wandered into the path of the moving vehicle. Despite immediate medical attention at Gong Medang Health Clinic, the boy was pronounced dead by 10:30 am. Investigations are underway under the Child Act 2001 and Road Transport Act 1987.

What are the legal consequences for such accidents?

In Malaysia, accidents causing child fatalities may lead to imprisonment, fines, and license suspension under the Child Act 2001 and Road Transport Act 1987. Bereavement claims and increased penalties for negligence, including counseling for affected parents, reflect the country’s commitment to child safety.
