Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS, has expressed indifference to accusations of “sportswashing” against his country. Critics argue that Saudi Arabia’s massive spending on sports is a diversion from human rights abuses.
Mohammed bin Salman’s remarks
In an interview with Fox News, MBS said, “If sport washing is going to increase my GDP by way of 1%, then I will continue doing sport washing.” He added, “I don’t care … I’m aiming for another 1.5%. Call it whatever you want, we’re going to get that 1.5%.” Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in sports, aiming to boost tourism and diversify its economy.
