Malaysia has kept its Tier 2 ranking in the US 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report, issued by the US Department of State. The Home Ministry welcomed the assessment.
Tier 2 means a country does not fully meet the minimum standards set by US law for eliminating trafficking but is making significant efforts to comply. The ranking sits above the Tier 2 Watch List and Tier 3, keeping Malaysia clear of potential US sanctions or restrictions on non-humanitarian foreign assistance.
Malaysia to Use AI and Digital Tools to Curb Human Trafficking
The ministry said the standing reflects international recognition of Malaysia’s sustained efforts against human trafficking. It noted the report highlighted prosecutions of public officials suspected of involvement in trafficking, higher government funding for anti-trafficking operations, and more specialised personnel, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
The report also makes eight recommendations for the next assessment period, from April 1, 2026, to March 31. These include improving early identification of victims, strengthening the quality of case investigations, making the recruitment fee system more accountable, and expanding partnerships with non-governmental organisations.
In response, the government said it has taken steps such as strengthening the integrity of public officials, setting up a victim management system that meets international standards, working more closely with civil society, and using digital technology and artificial intelligence.
The Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (MAPO) will continue joint actions against emerging trends such as job scams, the ministry added.
