Former Religious Affairs Minister Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa has defended Lembaga Tabung Haji’s (TH) decision to appoint a non-Muslim company for its rebranding project, saying it aligns with both practical needs and Islamic principles.
Mujahid explained that Islamic jurisprudence permits dealings with non-Muslims in business and governance, provided they do not involve prohibited elements. He cited examples from Islamic history, including Prophet Muhammad’s transactions with Jews and Caliph Umar’s appointment of a Christian treasurer, to illustrate the precedent.

He stressed that branding is a specialized field, and competence should take priority. “If the outcome strengthens TH’s image as a trusted Islamic institution, the community should feel proud, not threatened,” he said.
Mujahid also clarified that the RM5.9 million rebranding cost is a long-term investment to boost depositor confidence. Awarded via direct negotiation, the project followed procurement rules, transparent evaluation, and TH Board approval.
