BANGKOK — Australian political commentator and academic researcher Murray Hunter was detained in Thailand for 48 hours and charged with defamation over articles critical of Malaysia’s communications regulator, the MCMC. Hunter, who was arrested on Sept 29, was released on bail and is scheduled to face trial on Nov 17. He alleged that Thai police acted on MCMC’s orders and claimed officers appeared unfamiliar with his articles, citing only “defamation” as the charge.
