Muslim-owned eateries do not need halal cert

Umno’s ulama council has opposed a proposal requiring Muslim-owned eateries to obtain halal certification from Jakim, arguing that Muslim businesses already adhere to Islamic guidelines. Deputy president Datuk Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali stated that while certification could boost consumer confidence, it should not be mandatory. Religious affairs minister Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar had suggested making halal certification compulsory for non-pork and non-alcohol-serving businesses. Seputeh MP Teresa Kok criticized the proposal, citing concerns for small businesses and cultural diversity.
