Nasi Kandar Chain Fined RM221,773 for Illegal Astro Broadcasts

A nasi kandar chain must pay RM221,773.20 to Measat Broadcast Systems Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad, for illegally broadcasting Astro content in several of its restaurants.

The restaurant had valid subscriptions for only two premises but used smart cards and decoder boxes to broadcast Astro content in eight other outlets. Besides the compensation, Thaqwa agreed to use its Astro subscription only in authorized locations. 

Astro’s Chief of Sales and Marketing, Tai Kam Leong, emphasized the company’s commitment to fighting digital piracy and ensuring fair payment for creators and artists. The High Court ruled unauthorized broadcasts illegal in November 2022.
