The Great Nasi Lemak Debate, Netizens Claim it isn’t Nonya Heritage

Apparently, nasi lemak is known to be either a Malaysian or Indonesian cuisine, but particularly a Malay one. However, social media users claim that some Singaporean companies are trying to rebrand the delicacy as a “Nonya” heritage dish. Some feel that this is cultural erasure for the Malay Singaporean community.

Others state that our neighboring country has claimed Chinese Malaysian cuisine as their own too. However, many forget that we’re both one country at a point in time, and our cultures were and still are heavily intertwined.
