There are several talks regarding the return of the controversial national service in Malaysia, PLKN. However, it appears that most netizens disagree with its return as they feel that it is a “glorified summer camp.” They state that it is far from the national service that Singapore and Thailand have.
Is PLKN really a glorified summer camp?
PLKN was disbanded around 2014/2015 during Former PM Najib’s time. However, some state that they were actually called up to join the program, but then they began studying on a tertiary level. Following that, the government changed and the program was left in the dust.
Others state that the old national service was more of a self help course rather than trying to protect the country. Regardless, some do feel that a camp like this to help certain youths would be useful, but it shouldn’t be called national service.
