IPOH, Oct 5 — Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said he is open to postponing the Urban Renewal Act (URA) following public protests and objections from Umno and PAS. Nga assured that the government remains “ready and open” to accept constructive feedback before proceeding with the bill’s second reading in the Dewan Rakyat.
Postponing URA Bill
He added that the ministry’s current focus is on Budget 2026, which will be tabled on Oct 10. Umno and PAS have both urged the government to delay the URA, arguing that it requires more consultation with affected communities. The proposed law aims to simplify redevelopment efforts for old housing areas but has drawn criticism for allegedly sidelining Malay residents.
