The government has stated that it has no intention of introducing new legislation to address hate speech, as the existing laws are considered sufficient, according to the Minister of National Unity, Aaron Ago Dagang.
No new laws for hate speech
He highlighted that current laws, including the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, already cover the incitement of hatred and misuse of communication networks. The Minister emphasized the importance of equal treatment and non-discrimination as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, stating that discriminatory practices based on religion, race, descent, skin color, place of birth, or gender are not permitted.
While there have been calls for specific legislation to combat hate speech, the government maintains that the existing laws can be reviewed if necessary. Notably, there are ongoing discussions regarding a potential review of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
