Old Sewer Pipe Blamed for Jalan Masjid India Sinkhole, Not Limestone

The sinkhole incident at Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur last year was caused by the failure of an old sewer pipe, eroded by chemical reactions and unstable surrounding soil—not by limestone layers as previously claimed. 

Old Sewer Pipe Blamed for Sinkhole

Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa confirmed the collapse was gradual and localized. A special task force involving DBKL, JKR, IWK, and other agencies investigated the cause and proposed short- and long-term mitigation strategies. 

The area has since been fully restored. The government is now developing an AI-powered early warning system and conducting geotechnical studies to prevent future sinkholes in high-risk urban zones.
