Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming has announced he will take leave from academia to publicly campaign for former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in the next general election, irrespective of Khairy’s party affiliation. In a heartfelt Instagram birthday message to Khairy, who turned 50 on January 11, 2026, Ong described him as a close friend and “brother” in the harsh world of politics.

He expressed readiness to join Khairy’s Cabinet if the latter becomes prime minister. The two have collaborated across party lines on key issues, including Covid-19 vaccination drives and sports legislation, despite Ong’s DAP background and Khairy’s 2023 sacking from Umno.
