In 2023, MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal sparked outrage by claiming some Malaysians were selling kidneys due to financial hardship, prompting condemnation from the Health Ministry. 

Malaysia’s Organ Laws, Jail Term 

Former Health DG Dr Noor Hisham stressed that organ trafficking violates ethics and is punishable under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act 2007, with penalties up to 15 years’ jail and RM10 million in fines. 

Malaysia’s Human Tissues Act 1974 governs ethical transplants, while the Istanbul Declaration prohibits targeting vulnerable donors. A viral case of a Chinese teen who sold his kidney for an iPhone underscores the irreversible harm. Authorities now review transplant oversight to prevent exploitation.
