A Malaysian social media user recently went viral after sharing her experience with a former live-in maid whom she felt had become “too comfortable” in the household. In a thread, the user listed several incidents, including the maid referring to the home as “rumah kita” (our house), sitting at the dining table during family discussions, requesting a change of detergent to her preferred scent, and drinking the family’s soda before it was opened. The employer also claimed the maid became upset when prawns cooked for her husband were not shared. The maid eventually resigned, saying she was “too old to be scolded.”
Online Discussion Emerges Over Maid-Employer Boundaries
The post sparked a heated debate online, with many netizens discussing the importance of professional boundaries between employers and domestic helpers. Some users agreed that clear rules should be set in the household, with one commenter saying a maid should not treat the employer’s home as her own.
Others, however, criticised the perspective, arguing that domestic workers should still be treated with dignity and respect. Several commenters also highlighted broader issues surrounding live-in domestic work, with some suggesting that the arrangement itself can lead to misunderstandings and blurred personal boundaries.
